For those who prefer briquettes what brand do you use? I have tried a couple different ones and am not totally sold on them. I tried Natural Glo Old Hickory Briquettes (made by RO) and they imo were not to good. They burned faster than I would have liked and created a BUNCH of ash. The blue Kinsford was pretty good, stable, not to much ash and produced a pretty good pulled pork.

I have mostly used RO lump in my drum and while it burns nice, long and hot I would like to find something with more stable temps I can use for all nighters and get some sleep to boot.

OK, you tried the Kingsford blue, how about the Kingsford Comp charcoal? I myself don't like it, mostly a heat output vs cost thing. But it doesn't haven't the chemical odor like the blue bag. Have you tried the Wal-Mart charcoal in the black bag? It burns hot and long. Down side is ash production, but it is no more than the Kingsford blue bag. All briqquettes put outa lot of ash, some less than others, but still more than lump.

I am also a lump person, but when it comes to the briqquettes I choose the Wal-mart over all others in this area. It is definitely cheaper and wins the competition in heat output vs cost.

What matters more than any other is your smoker -- in this case a UDS, your method of smoking, weather and choice of meat to be smoked.

I've been using the OCC Rancher briquettes in my UDSs for quite a while, but recently ran out and it is no longer available around here... (who would have thought 100+ bags could be gone so quickly!)

The Royal Oak briquettes and the Sam's Choice have worked well for me since. I've got a couple of bags of the new Kingsford comp stuff in the shed that I will try soon, but at the price they are getting for it, I can tell ya that I probably won't be using much of it.

I use RO lump just about all the time! Find it works fine for me. Plus I bought a pit minder to use too. Now that will help you get some sleep!!

I like the Kingsford Comp briquettes. The blue bag Kingsford we get out West stinks as it lights but the Kingsford Comp does not.

And a little goes a long way. [IMG]
