Hey friends,

I am not a newbie, but have not posted in a while.  I purchased a Christmas Present for myself, a Lowe's Master Forge Vertical Gas Smoker. for some time I have been using a Brinkmann Smokin Pit Pro that my brother gave me and with your help I have done quiet well with it even on the mods, ( I am about as mechanical as a cinder block), but as it had to set outside with an old cover on it at my lake house where it is windy as hell it was about to give up the ghost due to rust especially in the side box where the charcoal went.  I looked and researched and researched and looked and finally settled on the Lowe's Master Forge 2 door Vertical gas Smoker.  I also went ahead and bought several types of wood chips in packages of 4-2lb. bag for each type of wood.  I then ordered a new Maverick ET-73 Remote Smoker Thermometer.  All that is left is to pick up a tank of Blue Rhino LP Gas from the Food City Store,  hook it up and turn it on.  Up until now most of what I needed for my charcoal smoker I either rigged or my father made.  What I would like to know from you, my Smoking Meat Friends, who have provided me with some of the best recipes I have ever smelled and tasted, they were good enough to even change my Mom to a Smoked Meat Fan! and for that I thank you, Seeing it is still before Christmas please tell me what else I will need to really start smoking meat big time, please let me know of any gadgets, tools, etc. that you have used and like so I can gather them up for my own big stocking stuffers for Christmas.  I would also love to here from anyone who has used one of these smokers and give me any advice on how to make it hum. I want to take this opportunity to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and the Smokiest New Year!  If you think I should know it or could use it please give me a post.  Your Smoky Old Friend, the Virginia Smoke Signal!    Grundy, Virginia

Well welcome back and congrats on the new smoker. If you are looking for something to smoke I would go with butt. It's a good smoke and it usually pretty lengthy too. That way it's pretty forgiving. Plus the pulled pork can be used in many different ways also. it looks to me that you have all the good toys once your thermo meter gets there. You might want a couple of them thou. I usually use 2-3 at a time. One for the smoker and even one on each shelf and then one for the meat or meats which ever is needed. So go get some gas and start smoking and don't forget the Q-view please.

Foodsaver vacuum storage machine, electric slicer, meat grinder, sausage stuffer, camera to take plent of Qview....BEER!  Is that enough for a start?

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions!  As I set here in my nice warm house it is 19 degrees F outside and snowing like hell! I live up on a hill and if any of you know anything about Central Appalachian topography in the coal rich counties of Virginia you know what a mess snow storms can leave you in.  We have a Snow Blower, and a neighbor with a 4X4 Honda with a snow blade on it.  I have already used 80 lbs. of Rock Salt and 40 lbs. of Calcium Chloride, that has just been since last Saturday!  So smoking or trying to smoke anything other than a cigarette is futile.  I got my Mom a Food Saver Vacuum unit for Christmas, (her and dad live with me and are both 75 years old but still very active), So I got one of those things down.  I have put in a call to a small country grocery store that went out of business to see if I can buy there meat slicer and since I don't do much sausage I will keep a look out for a good used meat grinder and maybe try some sausage later on.  If anyone knows anything about smoking a full size bone in ham, (about 18-20 lbs.) I sure would like to here about it. Everybody have a great Christmas and a very Smokey New Year!  Your smoking friend!
