Here is my first (documented, official) run of ribs and some smoked mac n cheese:

Jeff's Rib Rub...also whipped up a batch of Jeff's sauce (Daaammmnn tasty):

Into the smoker (temp stayed a pretty consistent 230°):

Mac n cheese recipe was a combo of stuff found on the interwebs:

And after (2-2-1 method with the mac n cheese going in for the last 1:45)

Close up...not bad, actually right on the money as far as I'm concerned:

The parents came by 9:00 in the p.m. (whoops on the timing), they loved it all, Mom wasn't sure about the mac n cheese but in the end said it needed more smoke flavor (I would agree but it was still some tasty grub). I think we have all caught the bug that is Smoking.

As I told them be honest for the first few smokes from then on out lie to me...

That thing is a beast! Clean build i like it. How did u attach the hardibacker? I want to use ur idea to insulate a 6 drawer file cabinet build I'm planning
How about just making the burner shorter and adjust the flame higher for high temps and low for sausage? Worse case you have a short piece of pipe with la bunch of hole in it?
THAT is a very IMPRESSIVE build!

I wondered if the proximity of the burner flame doesn't overheat the pellets in the AMNPS and dry them out making them burn too fast.  I would think that a baffle vertically between the burner and the AMNPS might overcome it, if there is a problem.

I hope that Todd will see this and chime on on protecting the AMNPS from too much direct or radiated heat.  I read on an MES thread that a baffle between its element and the AMNPS would improve performance.  That's what made me think that there might be a problem with the gas.

Again, great job on the build.  I'm not criticizing; only asking questions in order to learn.

Yeah that close to the flame was a problem and still is, I am gonna have to redesign a little bit. In the meantime this is what I have done to circumvent the issue:

The AMNPS sits in the box, the bottom of the smoker is open with a grate, and then there is a baffle between the burner and the smoke box

As far as making the burner shorter I tried that and for some reason could not maintain the blue flame, I am always tinkering so a redesign of the burner/smoke generator area is in the works. I originally thought I would have to have it all in a very compact low profile but I have realized just how big the inside is and I have room to expand the setup.

Cool build,  by the way that's a Type V  controller cabinet.

You might be able to find one at a maintaining agency. (City, county or state that maintain the traffic signals).

You can buy them but they would cost too much. ($600 - $800 +/- for a non painted cabinet. They also make a T-6 cabinet thats about 18 inches taller.

Naztec, Econolite and Southern manufacturing are a few of the makers.
