Down here is South Africa the only what looks like a decent smoker I can find is the Weber Smokey Mountain.

Anyone here have experience with it? Is it any good and would you get the bigger one or will the smaller one be fine for a family of 4?

Cheers

There are so many WSM owners here and we all love our smoker.  You'll be happy with either the 18.5" or the 22.5".  It is just my wife and me and I have the 22.5".  I don't have to trim meat or rib racks, can smoke for an army if need be, and have mine set up so it uses less charcoal.  If the price difference is not a budget breaker, get the larger one.

I have to agree, as a WSM owner i love my smoker and i find it great for short smokes (like a 3 hour chicken) to long smokes (like a 10 hour brisket). as for what size smoker do you need: determine the size you need for your family and get the next size up. you think you will need an 18.5 so get the 22.5 WSM. No one ever said i want a smaller smoker, but plenty of people want a bigger one.

As for how much you can fit on a WSM 22.5 you can add quite a bit without cutting. here is a pic of a whole packer brisket (14lbs) on the WSM 22.5

a little room on the side for something small and a whole top rack for whatever you want. it a great smoker, i highly recommend it!

I have the 18.5 and it's great! Only real problem is a packer brisket needs to get trimmed ribs depending on how many racks you can cut or roll them. I would buy the 22.5 then your only possible regret would be a little more fuel consumption. That said you can put plenty of food on the 18.5. if you can't check it out in person draw a circle about 18" and lay what you think you want to cook in it remember there's two racks and you can always hang some food in it with a little experimenting!

I am absolutely amazed by my WSM 22.5". Last weekend, I had it running on one load of fuel for 20+ hours straight. Temp was 225+/-5°F straight through.

You will be pleasantly surprised.

Love my 18.5 WSM.
