This maybe a dumb question...I have a brinkman two door smoker and it came with the water pan.How far above the coals should it goand do I really need it?
 
there should be a slot for it right above the coals......not too familiar with yer smoker. i use one in my vertical smoker but not my horizontal. it acts as a heat sink as well as a baffle or difuser from the direct heat to protect the meat above.
