wanting to build a bigger chip pan for my smoke hollow

So i have the 30inch electric smoke hollow. I have to fill the chip pan pretty often so i'm wanting to build a bigger one,obviously so i don't have to keep refilling so often. As of now i take a torch to light the chips first then put in the smoker. My thinking is to light a section of the chips in the pan in the hopes that they will slowly get the others going over time so that i dont have a huge amount of smoke at once. Kinda sounds like the amns obviously but for chips. Would something like that even work or should i just break down and buy the amns? Or would building a bigger pan to fit chunks instead of chips be worth trying? Just trying to keep from opening the door as much as possible.

Any way you choose will work, lighting from one end and letting it burn will work if your set on using chips. Of course making a bigger chip basket works.Or you can buy the  buy the AMNS which you know works,
