Good Evening,

I just received my very first smoker, Masterbuilt 30 inch electric model. I was curious about the top vent. It seems like it does not close completely. It looks like a tab prevents it from closing all the way. Is this normal and will this cause any quality problems? Hope to get it initial season and first smoke done this weekend.

Thanks,

Tracy

That does not hurt anything and will not affect your smoking. I have the same smoker you have

While smoking food you need to have the vent completely open.

Get that baby seasoned and smoke'em if you got'em!

Have fun, post some pics of your smoke adventures.

While most of us keep the vent wide open, Foamheart sometimes closes his some. Never all with way thou. Yours will be ok.

Get to smoking.

Yep...Wide open except 3/4 closed to concentrate smoke for a short cook like Shrimp. The only time I max close is to keep out bugs during storage...JJ

I use charcoal and not electric but I always smoke with mine 3/4 closed too until it is finished as it helps give a finer temperature control. I then close it fully to extinguish the heat after the meat has been removed.

It should close all the way. I own a MES 30 Generation 1. For smoking I keep the top vent wide open. After I'm done I close it tight to kill the wood pellet tray inside the smoker when it's too late or I'm too lazy to take it out of the smoker and place it on the ground so that it burns out on its own.
