Hey everyone,

Today I received my new charcoal basket from Horizon, for my OKJ Longhorn Offset.

I have been using the minion method, but only on my fire grate so was limited to how much charcoal I could put on.

Now I will not be limited, this charcoal basket will hold quite a bit.

I will be doing a spare rib smoke Sunday - app 6 hours - I normally start with about 15-20 lit coals on top of the unlit ones, only thing I am wondering, is how many unlits should I attempt to put in the basket? Will having too many unlit make the heat higher than I would want?

I appreciate any advice !

Don

Until you run it a bit, it will be hard to tell. With minion I only used 4 to 5 lit coals to my pile. You just gonna have to see how your temps are going to be and adjust for your future smokes. My old ECB with a full pan and mods could go 450º, great for steaks, but not for smoking.

Ok that certainly makes sense, thanks Flash.

I will start with maybe a third more than I would normally start with on the fire grate, hopefully will be a good starting point for me.

Thanks,

Don
