When I first bought my charcoal smoker (Master Chef Vertical Smoker) http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/masterchef-vertical-smoker-0851013p.html#.VSsBzkI6nKk I picked up wood chips instead of wood chunks not realizing that in the charcoal they would burn up quickly.

Local store had a Wood Chip Smoker Box on sale for $3 so I figured I'd give it a try, worst case scenario is I'd have something to put on the propane bbq when I didn't have time to do a proper smoke.  Tried it out yesterday, works great with the charcoal smoker placed on top of the coals and adds versatility in the smoking combustibles I can buy.

I bought a BBQ for my father several years ago and it came with a slide out drawer "wood chip" box for smoking. That idea always nagged at me, so I picked up a little cast iron smoker box on clearance a few years ago similar to this:

I don't know if thicker cast iron or the thinner stainless steel would work better, I'd imagine both have their pros and cons... but I've used mine on my propane BBQ and it works good.
