I spoke with Kathryn today and I am sad to report that things are not going that well for Paul.  For some reason they transferred him to the rehab facility over the weekend.  She thinks it is because he told them he wanted to leave to go for a reunion with some family and friends which was planned for yesterday.

On Sunday they inserted a catheter as he was not passing fluids properly. That seemed to help some. Later in the evening, the nurse could not wake him. He had a pulse and was breathing but she could not get him to respond or wake up. They decided to transfer him to the trauma center and Kathryn said not back to KU so they sent him to Overland Park Hosp.

He is currently in Overland in the ICU ward. He is not breathing on his own and they are doing some dialysis. They have him in kind of a twilight state trying to nurse him back to more functionality and the nurse said it would be pretty painful if he were awake with all the tubes and IV connections.

The nurse in ICU was reviewing his chart and told Kathryn that the folks at KU put on his chart that the “cancer was metastasizing”. Kathryn said they never told them for sure it was cancer since they could not do the needle biopsy so how could they put that on the chart.  No one has an answer.

Paul’s son tried to get answers and was given a huge run around by the KU folks and decided to call the local TV station. They are doing a complete investigation based on the things that he told them and may run a story if they can validate what has happened.

I will keep you posted as I find out more – sorry this is so long but I don’t know how to update it any other way.

Thanks for the update Scar...Paul another prayer sent. I hope he gets some quality care soon!!!

Sounds like the first care center has totally dropped the ball. He certainly deserves better care than this. Hope we hear some good news soon.

This came as a bit of a blow to me...hard to find words. Paul, Kathryn, hang tough. Maybe you've finally found the right place to get the proper treatment Paul deserves. I mean, really, you came there for help...that's what you should receive. If they can't help, they need to admit to failure, or at least to their inabilities, and at least help you find the people you need to get fixed up again.

Unfortunately, there are many healthcare providers who are not up to par (have dealt with this many times in my family, too), and hopefully something will get done about the previous hospital and staff. It's one thing to not be capable and just admit to that fact, while it's another totally different and unacceptable thing to be incompetent (and especially when lives are on the line)...there's no grey line which separates or distinguishes the two.

Prayers for all to to go well this time around, and that there's still time to correct the problem. Hospitals are far from anyone's first choice as a place to stay with the holidays fast approaching, but maybe you'll have good news by Christmas!!!

Best wishes to you and yours,

Eric

PS: thanks for keeping us up to date, Scarbelly.

KU Med Center is supposed to be one of the Finest hospitals in the area. Especially for cancer treatment. I can't understand why they have things so messed up with Paul. I'm so sorry he has to go thru all this. Seems they have been trying to decide whats wrong with him for quite some time not to mention what to do for him! Just wish someone would try to move forward with his treatment! Prayers going out for Paul and Kathryn. She must just about be at the end of her rope by now. God bless!
