With long smoke times needed for pork butts, how do folks feel about starting theirs and going back to bed?

I do and have my remote therm with me set at 250*F so the alarm will go off if the chamber gets that high. I use the mailbox mod so all combustibles are not near the heating element so the whole Amnps will ignite or grease dripping on the Amnps, starting a fire.

One of the main reasons I got my MES40.  I usually do get up to check on it after a few hours to make sure everything is running according to plan, put in temp probes, make sure AMPS is still running, etc.  But do that on a semi-regular basis, we tend to do lunches for family gatherings.  So no real efficient way to start things like PP or brisket in the morning and have them ready for lunch, other than cook ahead and re-heat.  I've done the re-heat thing before on PP and it works fine, but just like having it cooked and pulled for that meal, just me.

I'm with Al on the WSM just don't have a guru get it going and I can sleep all night just fine.

All the time on overnight smokes.  During the day, I do not check on the smoker till I suspect that food is close to finishing.
