UDS Rookie, Need Help

Hello All,

I am looking to create my own UDS build and have a few questions, 

I was quoted for a NEW 55 gal open head steel unlined drum for 45$ at a local drum joint, If/when I go to look at the drum what should I be looking for? In particular, what should I be looking for to confirm that it is indeed an unlined drum and NOT a lined drum, also, what should I be looking for to confirm that it is a NEW drum not a used one?

I also read that regardless of new/used you should always have an initial fire of the drum when you first get it to burn off the inside and out. This will not be a problem for me, I have the real estate to do so...

Open top drum with a lid. You want the lid to have a bung hole or 2.

When you look inside the drum, if you see bare metal, it's unlined. Most new drums will look like it. Refurb drums usually have some dents and the chimes and bottom may show wear.

You do want to burn it out. During the manufacturing process, lots of coolants and oils are used. A good hot fire, that burns off the exterior paint will do just fine.

Post pics of your progress and ask all the questions you need to.

If you plan on using the drum kid try and get one that has the locking band for the lid. Really helps seal it up good when smoking.

Regardless of whether or not it has a liner, if it's painted on the outside you will need to burn it out to get the paint off the outside. They aren't painted with high temp paint. If you don't you will be burning paint off the outside everything you cook. Not pleasant and toxic.
