Do you need to use heatproof paint for a UDS? The outside gets hot but not burning hot. Could I get away with normal spraypaint?

Several a the folk on here just used regular paint.

I used a high heat ceramic primer, paint an clear coat on mine.  Wasn't cheap but still looks real good after a year a heavy use.

To be honest I'd rather use high temp - but I've spent a bit on the beast already, basic paint to avoid rust for the moment would probably see me out the year, then improvements start next year. Thanks for the advice.

I bought some rust o leum grill paint at wally world, it was a bonus can ( 20% more ) and was just under 7 bucks. Was enuff to do the whole barrel and should be good enuff to get you thru the summer.

Thanks Lugnutz - that's a good idea - don't think we call it rustoleum over here, but I can probably find the equivalent (we don't have a Wally's World either as  wally is another word for idiot [IMG]   - but that's us - 2 countries separated by the same language [IMG]).

Given the weather we get here that might be the best idea for paint until I can get enamel.

The normal grill paint is flat black and dull with a average heat range of 350 degrees.  You can get the same heat range with a variety of colors by using engine paint you will find at a auto parts store.  If looking for something with a real high heat range like around 1200 degrees, you can find spray cans of header (exhaust) paint at a performance auto shop.  Or just get your UDS powder coated, that would be cool.

Powder coat would be cool - but aint gonna happen - don't know anywhere near me that'll do it. Got a friend who paints cars and bikes though - so once I've fed him I can ask for a favour......

LOL we are not separated by much my friend, if you've ever been to wally world ( aka Wal Mart ) you will use the term idiot more than a few times!

Ah right - I didn't know Wally World = Wal Mart, they own Asda (a super market chain) over here but they don't really do hardware etc. One thing I noticed they have started doing is bone in pork shoulder - so one of them will be on the UDS soon.

if you want it to stop rusting spray paint it with what ever paint, (i used walmart high temp grill paint) anyway even after painting rust spots were appearing so i sprayed the outside with cooking spray while it was hot and cooking and it makes it look killer, like a clear coat and havent had a rust problem since doing it, its cheap and works great
