Nice - we did a week down in Brookings in mid-July. My dad and I went out and caught a mess of rockfish and ling cod. I brought home about 22+ lbs. of filets

It has been a great summer for the Oregon coast this year, a lot of nice mid 70's weather.

Yeah it was an awesome fishing year. Best salmon season Oregon's had in a long time. My cousin just sent me a text they caught 55 albacore today. Most of them 25+ pounds!

I have about 10 pounds of rockfish waiting to go in the smoker. Only a few more lingcod fillets left then it will be time to go fishing again!

Great thread.I love the look of that boat festival. Wonderful skill to build boats like that. Pretty country in all the  photos looks like Tasmania or South Island of NZ .

I dont mind a rum now & then. I should be patriotic & only drink Bundaberg but I do like that Mount Gay & Sailor Jerry .

Thanks Mick! Most of us call the boats we build 50'ers. They look great from 50'!!

You have a great boat designer/builder named Johns Welsford in your neck of the woods. Here's one of his designs that a local Oregonian built. One if my favorite designs ever.

Welsford is from NZ they have a lot of skills that they have hung onto despite modern plastics etc.

Way back about 1830? a group of Moari men built a sailing boat in a European style just from eyeballing English ships .They then filled it full of things to trade & sailed it to Sydney.

It caused great consternation because it wasnt "flagged" as in a particular countries ship. It got impounded but they eventually relented let them trade but asked them not to do it again. If they knew how many guns they went back to NZ with they might have rethought it.

Moari wars were called a draw by the English ,signed a treaty. An indigenous people who were never going to give in to white rule. We have to play NZ in rugby tomorrow.

A friend of mines ancestor was the captain of the ship & ultimately a signatory to the treaty.

Sorry it was 1814 they came to Sydney, then followed the Musket Wars between different tribes then ultimately the Treaty. My mate is a Ngapuhi & a descendant of Honga Hika .
The "Muskrat Wars?" Weeee doggies that sounds like a good'un. Who won and how'd they cook all the muskrats? Mmmm.... baked with sweet taters I'm partial to!

I saw that Andrew Zimmerman guy eating musk rat on a TV show. They looked "interesting".He said surf & turf where ever he was muskrat & eel. Might have been Maryland.

We have wandered a long way from the original topic

Lovely old wooden boats in those photo's & very pretty country.Surrounded by high rise buildings this minute so feeling a bit nostalgic for the great outdoors.

Wish I could get over there with the camper van, It’s great to see those community enterprises doing well, there’s more to life than profit. Doubt we could have a boat build off like that over here, the Health & Safety goons would be all over it. Hope your kid gets to build his punt, that’s what childhood’s for :)

It's lots of fun! We may build this boat at home. Or one similar. I know that once we are at the show there will lots of other distractions so it will become a "dad" build. We will see. The wife has an order in for a stand up paddle board. I better start and finish that one first!

I like the idea of showing some of the pic's of where you live and where you have fun also.  Very nice thread.  Reinhard.

Thanks Reinhard. I too like seeing other parts of the world. It's fun to see people out enjoying where they live.

 Dirtsailor,

Current exchange rate $1 US = $1.20 NZ. Just in case you thought that was a big pricey.

Hell of a lot of sailing, great trout fishing, you have to put up with the accents but you can't have everything
