It's a matter of displacing the gas inside the tank.  Depending on the car and the amount of unburned fuel it has can be risky.  Filling with non flammable gas works but more expensive than water.  Now 500 gallons of water is a lot to use, but it will not be toxic when it comes out.  Can use it for lawn and such.  We actually cut a vent on one end with the water inside.  A bit messy, but it helped drain, and made an escape for any expanding gases when we did the doors.   Make sure to attach your hinges before fully cutting out the doors.  This will help with door fit in the future part of the build.  Once you have the doors cut, then you will want to fill that thing with hickory or oak (hot burning wood)  and torch it.  There are instances where the residue remains flammable, and you want to burn all the residue out before moving on to any further building stages.

Well, I dont have to worry about cutting it open...  I took the tank / trailer back to my trailer mfg yesterday, and the owner is going to get it cut open, plug areas fixed up, and it removed from the skids and mounted to the trailer where I want it.

He said when I come to pick it up, if I had the door measurements, we could draw them out, then he would cut them and leave tabs in so we can hinge / flange them later before cutting the tabs.

Now I am trying to find a place I can burn it before I take it home on Tuesday (burn ban in effect where the trailer mfg is, but not in my home county, or some of my family's property north of here).

Is there anything I can do to make it look like a "contained" fire (like for a grill / smoker)?  If I did that, it would be burnable anywhere...  Could I use a propane torch to burn some of it out to get working on it?  then burn it out after I get the doors cut out, etc?

I have always got those things red hot with a boat load of wood.  Also helps break down the layers of paint on the outside.

Well, I picked up the trailer this evening from my mfg.  They got the end cut off, it mounted to the trailer (directly to the frame), and the doors cut ready for hinges (they just need the final tabs cut to finish them out).

Now I need to get some hinges, a grinder, stuff for my new (to me) welder, and some materials to get this going.  Might be a week or 2 before I can start going forward from this point.

That should be a big help getting that stuff done for you.  Look forward to when you get to the rest!

Since the next 3 days or so are 20+ mph winds here, I can't really burn it out right now.  My question to you, is should I leave the doors tabbed in, or finish them out, before doing the fire?  With the 1 end open, and the other closed, and me being a big guy, I can't really climb into the tank to get a fire going on the closed end.  Would be WAY easier to do it with doors finished, since they could warp from the heat either finished or the partial cutouts...

I would put the hinges on and finish cut the doors.  Open one end up and flame it.  The doors are easy to clean and wire brush when the rest is said and done. My personal opinion is NOT to make the doors removable on a trailer mounted smoker.  If the latches bounce open, the doors could come off while your in motion.  Could lead to something pretty ugly.

Finish the doors, open them and fire it up. That way you will avoid warping the doors, allow the fire to breath, and you can wire brush the doors to finish them. Just another opinion!

It's looking good.

Well, this project is going to be on hold indefinitely...  I walked out to my driveway this morning, and my truck was missing.  I have a feeling its going to be a total loss, and the insurance coverage wont make things completely right (get me back to where I was in the same type of truck).

The trailer for the smoker parallel parked to a brick wall... about 4 inches away, with a narrow alley way.  The officer that did the report asked how I got such a long trailer that close to the wall in that alleyway.

Right now, the big deal for me (besides the truck being gone), is that all my trailer keys were in it.  The locks for the smoker, the locks for my jetski trailer, a church trailer I haul for my brother...  I have a feeling Im going to be buying new locks soon.

I hate to hear that.  Maybe they'll find your truck.

In the mean time, let's figure out a way to put a motor on the smoker!

Sorry to hear that. You were making some serious progress. Man that blows!  I wish you much luck with the insurance company.  I wouldn't except the first offer the insurance company offers.  Find some comparable trucks and there value first before excepting.
