Traeger or GMG?

Discussion in 'Pellet Smokers' started by steve knight, May 11, 2015.

  1. This will be my first pellet grill,..I've set a budget of under $500,..which kinda eliminates REC-TEC (after shipping, pellets, etc it would be closer to $700) For someone who only grills for myself, and maybe a couple of guests, I've narrowed it down to the Traeger Jr Elite, and the GMG Davy Crocket..

    My questions are this;

     Who has the better build quality?

     Who has the larger cooking area?..(the GMG seems kinda small)

    Thanks,..

    Steve

    I don't personally own either, but have heard and read good things about those GMG DCs...reviews on the Traeger seem to be a bit mixed...some very happy with it and some who hate it.  I am sure, however, that you can turn out delicious food on either one.  Suggest you read as many reviews of both cookers as you can search.

  3. Update;...after much thought, I decided to dig a little deeper and get the REC-TEC mini..mostly on the rave reviews that I've read here..

    I have this one from Lowes and got another 2 year extended warr for another $50 (just in case). Couldn't be happier....just did the best ribs I ever ate. 5.5 hours at 250...perfect. Much bigger than the Traeger and I saw GMG DC at a farm/feed store and was not impressed with the build for the price asked. This one is like a tank at 280 pounds. I could also just go pick it up as opposed to having it shipped. HTH, Willie

    I own the "big brother" of that grill, and like it very much...I'll bet you'll be happy with it, especially if you only cook for 2 or 3 people most of the time. Or, as Willie suggests, you could check your local Lowes and take a look at that Char Griller. I've seen one in person at my Lowes, and it looks like a very solid product...pretty similar construction to the my Rec Tec. I believe it's the same price as the Rec Tec Mini, and it's bigger. Plus, you'd save the couple hundred $$ in freight charges to get the Rec Tec shipped to you.

    Good Luck!

  6. I hope you got your Rectec mini off of Rectec's website.  Shipping is $99 on Rectec's site and $199 off of Amazon.  Your unit should only cost $600, not $700.  Also, no tax.

    I am thinking about getting the same Rec-Tec as well, let me know how it goes!
