I am making a new smoker/grill and got a nice quote on powder coating the tank and firebox. My firebox is an old plated steel wood burning stove.

Problem is, I don't know if the powder coating on the firebox will hold up to the heat. The guy at the shop said the only problem they have run into was powder coating some Harley tailpipes. He said the tailpipes got over 1200 degrees F at which point the powder coating starting to flake.

I am looking for anyone who has or know someone who has done this and had success or failure.

Thanks in advance.

Ask them about ceramic coating. I've seen it used in the automotive world on exhaust systems. Typically they can custom order the ceramic powder to match the color on the rest of the smoker.

Sorry it took so long for my to reply, but here goes.  Thank you very much for the information.  I will definitely ask about that.
