My son got the Akorn and I am impressed with it. Can believe how it holds the heat and how little charcoal it uses.
I have a mes electric that I really love , but I still don't think you can beat the flavor when cooked in a charcoal smoker. I always wanted a egg but just to expensive.

I had akorn for a while and loved it. Forst thing I did was replace gaskets to fiberglass rope and added rope to bottom drop out pan as well. Then added second rack to bottom so smaller pieces of lump wouldnt go thru. I had some spare BGE gasket leftover from a homemade build I used around the damper. I bought a BGE deflector for it as well. Smoker performed amazing

I would start looking online you may find a great deal on a used one or a BGE. Many stores close out grills in the fall and if your there at the right time you could get a deal that way to.

My son has the newest model and it doesn't leak at all. I think they've improved it from previous versions or he just got lucky. The cheapest do far is 329.00 I'm hoping they go on sale for Labor Day.

Check out craigslist as well. I was in same boat and didnt have the money for a BGE. Looked around on CL one days and a guy was selling an XL with neat for 600 because he was moving out of state and didnt want to take it. Didnt have money at the time so didnt get it. Ended up getting a great deal on an XL earlier this year. If you can find an Egg for a few hundred more than the akorn I would sef do it.

I've been keeping an eye on this type of smoker/grill as well. I bought and modded out a ECB.. And we're getting ready to move and thought we'd be moving ourselves to a permanent location so we sold it.. It actually went quick.. Guy showed up, saw it, said he'd paid the money we had on it that saved him from doing it all himself..

I'm looking at adding one to my stable soon. I want a BGE, but this looks close and reviews I've seen have been good.

For what it's worth, I own one of the Akorn units and cook on it most days.  Haven't tried anything really big like a brisket but chicken, tender loins, hamburgers and ribs come out great.  Sure I would like to have one of the $1000 units but its just not in the budget.  In the meantime I love the Akorn.

Had the Akorn for about a month now. FANTASTIC grill/smoker!! Well worth the $299 price tag. Basically you get about 95% of the performance of the Big Green Egg for less than 1/3rd the cost. I did add some Nomex gaskets to the top and bottom and it seals perfectly now.
