Lord God! Does anybody have an idea of a good DEPENDABLE thermometer?

I am tired of disposables. I have a grave yard of them. right now I have three probes less than an inch apart in two pork roasts. One is reading 169 (a 5 dollar Taylor) one keeps jumping between 252 and HHH (a $80.00 Digi-Tech). I have been smoking for 20 years even took 4th in ribs at a well known competition but cannot find a reliable thermomitor. i have bought them all.

Right now the thermometer on my smoker reads 226. My thermometer inside reads 225. I am not  rookie I am just tired of buying Chinese junk. I don't want to keep opening the door for a reading,

Hey bushrod, I use the Maverick Et-733. Seems pretty good, although I haven't used anything else to compare with. I hope others chime in, I'm rather curious what everyone uses.

I have used the Mav732, iGrill, and iGrill2. I like all three of those. I have my IGrill to my cousin when I upgraded to the iGrill2. I use the iGrill2 all the time and have no issues with it. I still have my 732Mav and use it as a back or if I need more than 4 probes.

I also have an instant read Thermowand from Lava Tools. I use it all the time for taking quick temps of meats and other things. Works great for that, and is inexpensive. All of my units are pretty spot on accurate. Whatever you get always test your probes in boiling water and ice water. Note any discrepancies and adjust accordingly. Don't just test when you first get. Test often.

The two probes on my 733 are part of the problem. The one that reads the meat tremp. shows"HHH" the one for the grill reads between 80 and 300 back and forth.

I use an electric smoker most times and it never gets above 275, I don't know what is wrong. I had three probes in the same piece of meat with my smoker at 225 and got readings from HHH to all over the chart.

I don't like opening the doors and losing heat and smoke but i bought a Taylor Probe thermometer that worked great for about a year. Guess what the battery died I went to foyur stores trying to find the weird size 1156A battery to no avail. I just bought a new probe.

I use the Maverick ET-733. It's a pain to program but after you've got it set up it's very cool and very accurate.

Call Maverick. You have either a bad unit or bad probes. I had this happen with my first et 73 unit back in the day and it was because I got the probes wet where they meet the wire. I think the new probes are waterproof if I'm not mistaken. From what I have heard mav. is pretty good with replacing bad units. They used to replace the first probe for free, I don't know if they do that anymore. Anyway it's worth a try. I am going on 4 years with my 732 and it's still going strong. I have left it out in the rain on multiple occasions too.

I bought a Taylor single probe therm that was branded "Food Network" and I really liked it. It seemed to be very accurate. That illusion was dashed last Christmas when I used it for monitoring a boneless ribeye roast that I was cooking in the oven. I was shooting for a 125-130° I/T and the Taylor/FN read 130°. I double checked it with my wife's ThermoPop and lo and behold the actual I/T was 140° and so I pulled the roast, which turned out perfect. Had I relied on the Taylor the roast would have been overcooked. I've learned that the cheapy therm probes are not worth the cheap money they cost.

I've been using the Mav 732 for about 2 years and have never had a problem. I check them in boiling water several times a year and it is always between 3*-5*. I agree, you should contact Maverick and ask them for assistance. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out. Joe
