Found this video on youtube about how to build a fire using only one log and a small amount of kindling:

I wonder if anyone has tried this method and whether it produces enough heat and smoke to cook?

I've never seen that before, but as it was said in the video, if the log was cut flat on top you could put a pan on it & use it to cook.

Maybe others on here have tried that before.

Also I embedded the video in your post, since we don't allow YouTube links on here.

Ryan, I tried this before camping. You can put a Dutch oven on top if your careful, or a cast iron skillet. I didn't cook on it, was just testing the method. It's a good skill to have in a pinch, kinda like a poor man's rocket stove.

In this area, it is called a Canadian Candle, often used in hunting and fishing camps. We also use it when having camp type meals along the river or creeks. It provides a warm glow while we get a warm glow.

We do that when we go camping. Sometimes we'll put them out, flip them over and use them as chairs or tables around the campfire the next day. Somewhere I have some photos...
