So I noticed today that the 60 gallon compressor tank I will be using has a 1 1/2" pipe running through the middle  lengthwise. It is welded to the center of both end caps. I am worried if I cut the door first and then cut the pipe out it might distort the tank. I am not sure why the pipe is even in there, has anybody had to deal with something like this?

Hello Tobycat.  Are you at it again???

Interesting problem.  I do see your point in asking the question.  I have never seen this before but then again I have not cut into compressor tanks before.  I would "guess" it is in there to support the welds on the end caps.  I assume it is a pretty thin tank ( realitively speaking ) so they put in a "stiffener" in case some idiot decided to see if it would hold 1000psi.  If you can get to it I would cut it out first, just to be sure.  Just my opinion.  Have fun with it.  Keep Smokin!

. I discovered the pipe in the tank by accident yesterday when I was grinding down bungs. I have looked all over SMF and even other forums but haven't seen another person mention anything like this pipe through the tank. My plan as of this morning is to use a hole saw and cut the pipe loose from one end cap to release any tension and then cut the door.  Will be interesting to see if that pipe pulls into the tank when I cut it loose.

Well it turns out that this pipe was not welded to both ends as I thought but was about an 1/8" - 1/4" from the other end of the tank.  I cut the 1 1/2" piece of pipe that was sticking out of the end cap off close to the tank. I then used a 2" hole saw and slipped it over the pipe and cut the pipe free and to my surprise it dropped down when I cut through.

Hello Toby.  Now that's a strange one.  I would say that is the drain on the bottom so I can't think why that pipe was there.  Whether that was an inlet or an outlet I don't see the purpose for the long pipe.  Oh well.  Live and learn.  Have fun.  Keep Smokin!
