This is going to be my first attempt at building my own set-up. I saw this design and thought it looked pretty cool. I was wondering if anyone has used a rig with the smoking chamber and fire box arranged this way. Any input would be greatly appreciated on this. The link has a couple of pictures to show how they will be sitting.

How does it cook? The main reason for my large firebox is so it can also double a a big grill if need be for burgers and steaks.

Mine cooks great, I just one a rib contest for the 2nd year in a row. My smoke box is attached to the main cooking tank via a 6-7 inch plinth as you can see in the pic. Inside the cooking tanking right above the opening of the plinth I have a steel plate that goes from the back of the tank out to about 6 inches from the sides and front, that way there is no direct heat coming from the smoke box. It also allows the smoke to roll out from under the plate and up over the meat. I like your idea of a big smoke box to double as a grill but being bigger it might take more to heat. I usually start mine with 1 18# bag of kingsford charcoal and let that burn down which will take mine to about 275 degrees, I play with the vents to bring down to about 250 where I like to cook. I then add wood chunks mainly apple and oak for smoke flavor and to help maintain heat.

Thanks, that's some of the info I was looking for about the plate and the heat. I am going to try and fab some kind of temporary block inside to focus the heat when not using it as a grill for a faster heat up. Thanks again, this should be interesting to build.

Diamond Plate is where I got the idea. Gonna change it a little to make sure I don't upset anyone.
