well been wanting to do one of these for awhile but really haven't found a drum ....well my bro in law was throwing away a 55 gall drum that all he kept in it was wood chips for his garden..don't know what was in it before he had it...but i know he has had this for at least 2-3 years with nothing but wood chips.....he said he doesn't need anymore gettin in the way...so i ask him can i have it and he said sure...well when i went to pu it up it had probably 20 gal of water in it and half full of wood chips ..now we really haven't had much rain here since june so you can imagine how rusted the inside of this drum is....plus he has alot of metal scraps even found a exhaust pipe i can use .....well anyway hopefully i can still use the drum...but its going to take alot of elbow grease to get rid of all the rust..funny thing it still seems pretty solid....take a look and let me know if you think it still worth it...thanks

still time to wait for the buildoff in nov.

do a good burn and i used one of these after words. took it to bare metal inside in about 1 hr. was about $5.00 at wal mart (metal agressive) and fits in any cordless or electric drill. get some dust masks too.

bgc i will have to see that thread and check it out and if it isn't for awhile i join up ...thanks...btw i have about 3 of those brushes...thanks

The rust is no big deal unless its flaking.
Don't let the food touch it, but it won't hurt you (if rust hurt you don't drink water from faucets).

mine had some light rust a lil less that yours. and it burnt off great. i did a burn two nights in a row. and then used the wire brush. took inside to shiny bare metal. and rubbed with corn oil and burned hot yesterday. inside looks like a new cast iron skillet after seasoning.

you should be able to get rust off.

P.S. got a free drum today. burning it out now for the buildoff. be painting tomorrow.

heres how my drum looked day i burned it. see rust in it?

this is after burn.

this is after wire brush and oiled. it was very cleaned. and i pressure washed it after burn and brushing.

here it is seasoned.

be doing my first cook on it tomorrow.

MAN, I think this Drum thing is rubbing off on me.....I've been eyeballing the drums here in my shop. Hopefully I can find a suitable drum.
Nice job so far guys....
As far as the rust....as long as it's not too deep, you should be able to get it all out of there with the wire brush. Good Luck!
