I don't post on here very often but I have found this site to be very helpful so far. I thought I would share with y'all what I'm up to today. Decided to smoke a small chuck roast, about 3.5 lbs. Here's the kicker, I'm using green aspen wood on top of Kingsford briquettes. I know most of y'all just jumped up and kicked your computer screen and possibly uttered or yelled a few obscenities. However, I live in CO and we have tons of aspen trees and I ain't rich, so I'm testing it out and seeing how this whole thing works out. I'll update y'all later today and if I figure out how to use pictures on here I'll post a few pics of the final product. Wish me luck.

Really that is all you could find? Don't you have any scrub oak around there? How about Pinon'? I would steer clear of green wood, you will get creosote flavor if that is what you are after. I have smoked with Birch before and even cottonwood but never green. For like 4 bucks you can get some chips or chunks at home depot or wallyworld or whatever. Lasts a while too.

Also chokecherry, willow, wild rose, there are many good smoking woods laying around take a drive around the block I am sure you could find better than green aspen. sorry, horrified! Like ribs in a crockpot.

Way to far from a store to get wood chunks. About 100 miles to far. I've heard from some of the locals around here that Aspen has been used for a very long time and that often enough they used it green. We do have some willow bushes around here but I wasn't sure if that would be the same as a willow tree. And I don't think we have a lot of scrub oak at this high of an elevation, I live at almost 9,000 feet.

For anyone who is curious. Green aspen worked out well. I had some trouble regulating my temps so it wasn't as tender as I had hoped but good nonetheless. I anyone else is curious as the the effects of smoking with green aspen wood, I think it worked well. Will definitely be trying it again.

often scrub oak and bristle cone pine are the only things growing up on the ridges. I lived many years in colorado from the front range to the san juans and a bunch of places inbetween. You should be able to find something in town I would think. glad it worked out.

OK I knew I had been there before. Used to do A lot of climbing down there when I lived in silverton and also salida. I would think your best bet would be oak for around there. High desert plant for sure. Of course you might have to wait for the spring melt lol.
