smoking a butt

    Put a beautiful 9 lbs butt in the smoker about two hours ago fat side down cranked the heat to about 250. Just turned down to 225 for another two hours then time to flip it and put the meat probe and smoke for another 5-6 hours. Here's a pic of the butt before going in. Looking pretty..

    Looking good,

    It may take longer than expected.  My last butt was 10 lbs and took about 17 hrs at around 225.  It came out incredible, hope yours does too.

    This will be my first smoke using my mav 733. I've played with the smoker empty to figure out how far off the factory therm is. Now time to put what I've found out to the test.

    I actually smoke for 9-10 hours then I put the butt in a slow cooker on high. And while I do that I take the drippings and separate the juice and fat. Then add the juices back. Just let them sit for about 4 hours.

    But good lookin out. I could use a little info.

    At the four hour mark.. not quite 140 degree yet. But flipped it anyway.

    I know I said I would keep the pics coming but I had some things come up. But I did manage to get a pic of the pulled butt..

    The bone slid right out

    Very successful. I just wish I would have been the one to take care of it instead of my 11 year daughter. All I got to do was the first 4 hours.

  12. Nothing wrong with that, maybe she will get interested and take up smoking.

    Nice looking pulled pork. Congrats to your daughter- she did a nice job! Never done a good sized butt, only small ones. What was your smoke time?

    It was in smoke 9 hours. I told her over the phone to put it in a foil pan and cover will foil and put it in the oven at 300. She pulled out of the oven at 3 hours later and let it rest an hour and pulled it for me.. she did fabulous.

    I'm sure she will. I smoke her uncle smokes and her grandfather does as well.
