New to smoking, bought a Brinkmann Smoke 'N Pit. So far, it's nice - but takes a long time to smoke things. I was wondering during the smoking process is the initial 8lbs of charcoal suppose to last 6 hours or should you add more during that time? Anyway, the Brinkmann does a good job on grilling in the meantime.
 
Welcome to SMF. Smoking is an art of time. You don't want to rush this process. I particularly don't know how long a basket of coals should last. Some people here use wireless thermo's, other themo's on the grill. Smoking should be done by temp not time. I know I have personally gone through a bag of charcoal & lump on a smoke once but the rewards were well worth it. I hope you too can benefit from the slow art of smoking. Enjoy your stay.

First off welcome Novice to SMF. You'll like it here cause there are abunch of good folks here that would just love to help you out with just about anything to do with smoking. We really like to have newbies here because they can bring in a new propective to how things are done. It's also free and it will give you the basics of smoking. So after all of that you just need to go grab something to smoke and if you have any question just post them here and we will answer it quickly so you don't have any mishaps with your smoke.
