    Iam building a smoker I was trying to decide where to put temp prob for smoker temp thinking it should be in the middle of cabinet ?

    I'm not a fan of fixed mounted therms. I like my therm to be where the food is on the cooking grate. Get yourself a good multi probe remote therm.

    Another thing about fixed mounted therms is there's no way to test them once they are mounted.

    Like DS said, rely on a digital probe you can move around. It's amazing how different the temps can be just a few inches up, down or sideways in a smoker.
    A lot of folks use two thermometers, one at each end (of an offset) down close to grate level.
    In the middle would be good if you want one, just make sure it's a good one and don't rely on it completely.

    Thank you for the input
  5. I haven't built a smoker before, but knowing what I know with my limited experience, I would be more apt to incorporate provisions for different types of leads from multiple probe digital thermometers like the maverick and Igrill models than putting in a fixed probe.

    With that said, I do like the way the fixed ones look on big pits when mounted left, right and center. Maybe do both?!? :grilling_smilie:

    Just a for instance;

    The Tel Tru tip is about 6" from the grate @ center and the Maverick is towards the rear a little left of center @ grate level.
    Right next to each other they only differ 4 degrees.

    I like the Tel Tru's as well. I have them on all my smokers.

    Once you check the Tel Tru against a therm on the grate & see if there is any difference then you can make adjustments.

    My Lang came with a Tel Tru on the end opposite of the firebox.

    If I were building a smoker I would put 3 of them on the lid.

    Left, middle, & right side.

    One of these days I want to get a second one and space them across the bottom. Until then, it's nice to see that big dial from 15 ft away and if the pointer is straight up I know I'm at 250 to 260 at the cook.
    I still use the remote Maverick so I can do something in the house & keep an eye on things...
