I'm going to build a smoker. I will either modify a Char Broil charcoal grill by adding an outside firebox and other mods, or I will start from scratch with the tank from an old vertical air compressor. I'm leaning toward the compressor tank because of its thickness, but I'm concerned as to whether its large enough n diameter. The tank is 28 in. long and about 16 in. in diameter. I just need a small smoker as we don't entertain, but is the diameter of that tank big enough? Is so, where do I cut it? I assume I want to cut it a little off center making the bottom half bigger than the lid, but I don't know. Please give me your wisdom and advise.

Thanks

Steve

Daves forum that Inkjunkie posted is very good to use. The main question that I have is, why do you want to build a vertical smoker? For the size tank that you have, it would make a much more efficient horizontal smoker. That's my $0.02.

Its the tank from a vertical air compressor but I plan to turn it on its side and make it a horizontal smoker.
