Smoke stack height

  1. Hello, all I need a little assistance I am building my first smoker out of two left over air compressors one is 1/4 thick (cooking chamber) and the other is 3/16 for the firebox the end plate will be 1/4 for the cap and door, I used the calculator that I found doing searches for my build, my question is this for the smokestack I am using a 41 1/2 square 1/2 piece of steel I am right at were the calculator says it needs to be I want to extend the spoke stack into the chamber to the cooking grates. Does this measurement of height mater were it starts for instance will I be good at the grates, or does the measurement start at the top part of the chamber and needs to be 41 inches from the top of the smoker? I will be at least 9 inches down into the cooking chamber if I do what I want to do. Thanks for any assistance and replies.

    You could make it a little longer than the calculator calls for then cut it off if you need.

  3. The piece if steel the I have is only 41 1/2 inches, this was all free materials and I am trying to keep costs at a minimum. Thanks for your reply (o;

    I could be wrong but I think the calc is based of the total length of the stack. So being down inside of the cook chamber shouldn't make a difference.

    Did I read correct that the stack you are using is ½" material that is 41 ½" . Is this a piece of plate that you are going to cut and weld into a square tube? Or is it square tube ½" wall?

  5. Thanks for the reply Tom, the smoke stack is 1/2' materiel that is 41/12' tall and yep its a square tube that has a 1/2' wall, it was free (o; and it is huge and heavy. I am a bit worried about the cooking chamber being only 3/16 bu it will have a cap in it of 1/4 material so it should be good I hope, as the cooking camber is 1/4 also.

  6. Woops, I meant the Firebox being 3/16" !!! Sorry about that.

    Your 41& 1/2" tubing is still 41&1/2 " long regardless if it's mounted flush or down in the smoke chamber. I think it's a volume issue and you shouldn't have any adverse effects sticking down to grate level. JMO

  8. Thanks Jonnyrod
