I was checking out the horizon website & they make convection plates for Oklahoma joe smokers. they also make a plate that slides. there is a rod that runs thru the smoker & extends out the smokestack end. what would be the advantage? I would think you'd want to keep the plate up against the firebox.

The plate can be positioned wherever needed so that the desired temps on both sides of the cook chamber can be achieved. This may or may not be the same temp for both sides. There are many situations where one would want a considerably hotter environment, or maybe just a little, on one side, relative to the other.

The adjustment rod makes this easy to do, especially if the cook chamber is already loaded with product, or if the plate has gotten toasty. The handle is by no means required but can be quite convenient.

I've been reading a lot about convection plates but this is the 1s time I've seen this. the explanation makes sense. most tuning plates go all the way across the cooking space so would this limit the overall effect?
