  1. Hi guys/gals

I'm just getting started with a new smoker. Got the link to this site and looks like a lot of good info to sort thru.

I sure hope I get to ask at least one dumb question w/o getting pummeled. lol

So far I've smoked chicken, pork shoulder (NC style pulled pork), ribs, brisket and salmon. I'm hooked!!

BTW, I've never smoked w/ redoak although I have a woodshed full of it. I like hickory and pecan so far. Got some apple curing.

    Thx for your patience!

welcome, I have used red oak without issue in the past, not as strong as hickory but stronger than the fruit woods in my experience.

Hi mark, and welcome to the SMF. What kind of smoker are you using? I like red oak for beef, especially for grilling, great taste.

  11. Thx all for the welcome!

ktotheb: I'm from a small town between W/S and Greensboro - 15 miles north of Lexington. Lexington style BBQ is the main BBQ in this area.

JDT: Thx for the recommendation. I want to try the red oak on the next brisket

richoso1: A coworker got me interested in cookshack ovens. I like that you don't have to tend it and the results (so far) are great. I got the cheapest model (sm020) from
