I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I think I had enough to eat for a few days!

I got tired of catching a whiff of that tank every once in a while. I thought maybe I put off cutting it open long enough!

Over the last few weeks I've filled it with water and dawn 3 times and left it sit each time. There are 4 ports on the top of this tank. I plugged off 2 and put 90 deg elbows on the other 2

I don't know if it helped any but on the inlet where I hooked up the hose I soldered on a piece of copper pipe I had laying here into the ID of the 90 deg elbow. It went into the tank and stopped a few inches from the bottom. I thought maybe if it filled from the bottom and I left it run out the top for a while maybe it would help to rinse it out. Wow the water coming out the top sure did stink! Not sure if it helped or not but I felt better about cutting into it

I wasn't sure how I was going to cut into it. I know some have used a plasma cutter but I really didn't want to. I thought maybe keep it filled with water and use an air powered cut-off wheel. Didn't really want sparks though. I ended up drilling a few holes next to each other so I could get my sawzall blade in there

I ended up drilling 2 more in the corner to start the cut around the circumference of the tank. Should have done that first I guess. Could've saved myself some drilling

With a sharp blade it cut really nice. Could've easily done it with one but I used 2.

I was kinda nervous about cutting away too much/not being square/etc... So I cut shy from where I needed to be. Turned out to be a pretty nice cut-out. Looks like I gave myself some extra work to do

Turns out I really didn't need to be as nervous as I was. Cautious yes. I would say if you are nervous about it, listen to what these guys have to say on here. There is so much information on this website! Rinse it out as many times as needed for you to feel comfortable.

The tank still stunk pretty bad after I opened it up so I decided to burn it out of there

The weather was dead calm here yesterday so the fire just stayed right by the door and didn't want to burn towards the back away from the opening. I set a little fan there to feed it air. Worked pretty good. Just enough to give it what it needed without making it into a blowtorch

I rolled the tank 180 just to make sure everything was getting hit.

Turned out pretty good. Got rid of the smell and took off most of the paint in the process. Had the fire going for about 5-1/2 hrs. Then I just let it go out on its own

I couldn't help but set it on the FB just to see what it would look like. I finished cutting out my notch in the tank to where it needed to be. Got a pretty decent fit on both sides

Now to stand back and take a look at what it's going to be like. I even set my smokestack up there to get a visual what that would look like

That's it for now. I better quit dreaming and get back to work! Thanks for looking

The kids have been asking for pulled pork sandwiches. Who am i to let them down? I threw a 2nd one on for a guy I got a ton of free apple wood from. Here is last night mid-seasoning.

It started out in the single digits here this morning. It's now all the way up to 13 deg! The old one is running pretty good though

Don't know if you can pick up the smoke in the pic. Might be hard with the snow as a backdrop

Going thru some wood today! It'll be interesting to see the difference with an insulated FB.

I've been looking around for insulation and ran across this place. It's a 25ft roll, 2ft wide, 1" thick for $33.44

I am looking at the right stuff right? It's just so much cheaper than other places. Seems the other places want double to triple that price! I don't know what shipping would be yet. Just want to know does anyone have any opinions on this?

I worked on my door a little bit over the weekend. I laid it out to get my spacing right and so it looked right too

Thought it would be easier and make nicer cuts in the mill.

Here they're all cut out

Because the door will also be insulated I need some spacers between the 2 plates

That's all I have for now. I'll try to get more done this weekend

That's good stuff....  It will work...  It's VERY high temperature insulation...   good to around 2,000 deg. F...

Found a little bit of time the last few days. I started tacking the door together. These are the sleeves that connect the front and back layer of the door. The insulation will fill in between the 2 layers

I also decided I better figure out my hinges. I just couldn't find ones I liked so I decided to make some. Here are the hinge parts

It's a big door, I didn't want the hinges to be too small. I wasn't sure how they were going to turn out but I think they look ok

Where that hinge overhangs is where the outer sheathing will butt up to it flush after the FB is insulated

I was able to find time to work on my door a little bit. My insulation finally came

It worked really good marking it for the cutouts. I just pressed on it and it kept the indent for 2-3 minutes

Here's the door with the insulation inside ready to go

And here's with it all welded up and then ground smooth

Now just need to do up the vents and I can move on from the door

Thank you for the compliment tjmitche. I really appreciate it! I'm just lucky to have access to metal working stuff

I went to order some of that from the same supplier & they tried to add $51 for shipping.  I canceled that in a big hurry & ordered mineral wool from McMaster-Carr

Yeah I should've probably edited that post. I tried emailing them about shipping but never heard back. Kinda took that as a bad sign. So I went to ups website and figured out shipping on my own. Price worked out the same on Amazon. Comparable to Mcmasters. I just went ahead and ordered off amazon
