Couldn't find a rack for GOSM so I built this one with stuff I had around home. 2 - 1" x 3" x 22 1/2" pine board and 4 - 22 1/2" x 3/4" wooden dowels . Notch the 1 x 3 's at 2 1/2" from each end and 3" from center to center from each other , then fasten with finish nail in each end of dowel . The rack will slide in and out on top of the upper shelve support and no need to fasten to smoker with anything . IT WORKS !!!! Made S hooks at work .

p.s. My first venison brats and summer sauage ( hi moutain kits )

Nice mod for your GOSM !!!
I just use square hard wood dowels cut to length and lay accross to the shelf brackets; that way the rails are adjustable and can be put in the smoker at any shelf height.

I like your solution. Looks really good and flexible.

I made some hooks out of small eye-bolts and installed them in the top. I still have room to make one like yours, and may give it a try.

nice rack ,but you can avoid using hooks by just running the dowels through the loops, or drapping the links over the dowels. This is where round dowels are better than sguare lumber with sharp edges. I'm thinking of building one similar to yours to get my summer sausage a little higher, this way I can utilize more of the casing. I also like that hook idea.

One thing about the hooks is you get about 2.5-3 inches higher, which if you fill a fiberous casing that's longer than the 1 lb. ones, they can hang pretty low towards the heat source.

I still like the rods, and may try that for linked sausage.

I opted to go with square dowels thinking they wouldn't roll on the shelf brackets. Suppose I could drag out the sander and smooth the middles of the dowel though...... Another thought is I suppose round dowels don't tend to roll to easy with 9 to 12 pounds hanging on them !!!

I used hooks like jerrykr on the first fridge smoker I made, it was one of the old style round tops, single door with the freezer inside, I wanted to get them up as high as possible. These square dowels I have in my second fridge smoker which is a stainless steel 7 foot, so having to get them as high as possible was not an issue.

mossymo,

If you use round dowels, you could sand a flat on each end so they wouldn't roll. I might try that myself.

Boy necessity is truly the mother of invention. I don't know if it is smokers just beg to be modded or the people that own smokers are by nature tinkerers and experimenters. I love it, soon we will have the best smoker design and be able to put the manufacturers out of business just like Linux did to Micros........ Oh wait maybe not. We'll tinker anyhow!!

Nice job Kenny .I have been kicking around a few ideas on how to get my summer sausage up just a little higher. Thanks for the pics.
Hey that is a nice looking load of eats you got there!
