    Some good info...

Meth cooks are getting the propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart,
Kroger, Albertsons, etc. and emptying them of the propane. Then, they are filling
them with anhydrous ammonia (which they now have a recipe for by the way).
After they are finished with them, they return them to the store.

They are then refilled with propane and sent back for you and me to buy.

Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the structure of the
tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane and hooked up to our
    grills, etc.

You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue
around the valve areas. If it is present, refuse to purchase that one.'

Check out the following website for more details. They also have
    pictures you can show.

WOW, what these people come up with.
You'd think under those circumstances that the folks who refill would be mandated by law to make sure no other chemicals/contaminents were present before refilling. Of course, some meth heads bungle will end up costing us more money.

Thanks for the heads up! [IMG] Points.

I have one propane tank that came with my Charbroil Masterflame that I always have filled. I never exchange it. But I will need to pick up another one for my SnP after my Afterburner gets here. I'll have to be careful when I pick out that second one.

Thanks for posting this info, Coyote!!

I'm curious how they would refill the tank with the anhydrous ammonia. It would take an extremely large amount of pressure, I would think.

MoFo I'm not sure how they would do it either but sure not worth taking a chance I'll be looking at tanks a little better from now on or just getting mine refilled and quit swapping em

Thanks for the heads-up on the meth use. I own two tanks that i don't exchange, i just get them refilled. I use to exchange a tank, but now that I've moved there is a rental place within a 1/4 mile that refills for less than an exchange.

I dont know where NPGA they received their info and whether it was from actual occurences or they were just trying to play it safe.

When you think about it, the whole idea doesn't make sense. Why would meth manufacturers exchange the cylinders since they aren't interested in propane. If they didn't want to call attention to themselves, they could just buy or steal new ones.

In any event it doesn't hurt to know about it.

Maybe folks finding the tanks they have abandoned, and getting the deposit/refills done on them is the deal?

Sounds possible Rich , or they are stealing the emptys 'cause they are lighter , or combination of both,

I do the same thing. However, with rising prices I've noticed a local grocery store who hasn't kept up with price rises and does the exchange $3 less than market price. They have little traffic for propane.

I have two tanks. So I exchange the lesser of the two on occasion and do refills for one/both tanks. FYI. Keep yer eyes open while out n about.

It makes a whole lot more sense to watch the stuff on Craigslist for evidence of use with anhydrous ammonia.

Reminds me of an abandoned keg of beer we "found" one time in college. Seems somebody put their deposit on it and abandoned the thing.

We took the empty keg straight to the distributor and the jerk gave us the run around about not being able to give us any kind of refund for the keg deposit since we didn't get the keg from them. We proceeded to tell him that this empty keg was worth more to him than to us and that we'd spend the rest of the day shooting holes in it, just for kicks.

He walked to the back of the warehouse and came back with a case of beer. We smiled and left a happy camper (we ended up shooting the empty beer cans instead).

i think this comes from the same source who send out those e-mails saying gangs are doing initiation by flashing their lights at another car, if they flash back they have to kill the people in the car.

my personal fav. That pepsi is coming out with patriotic labels but won't print the word GOD on them, so we should all boycott pepsi.
