Rub ingredient question

    I'm just getting started with smoking and I have Jeff's rub recipe. It's pretty clear except for one ingredient, Chili powder. Is this commercial chili powder with all the added spices or is is just ground dried chilis? I have both in my pantry.

    I just use regular commercial chili powder. Works for me.

    I believe that commercial chili powder is what he's referring to, otherwise it might have specified, "ground xxxxxx chili pepper powder" or something to that effect.

    If it helps any, I've found that commercial ground chili powders can differ a fair amount as far as what they have in them. For instance, some have garlic powder, onion powder, etc...ingredients that may already be called for in your rub. So why add them twice (of course, very little extra, but still) when you make your own rub?!?

    That's why i just choose the one that has the fewest ingredients besides ground chilis...

    I havn't bought chili powder in some time-I make my own,and yes some of mine I add onion powder garlic powder c umin etc-I think he means store bought.make my own rubs also so not sure what goes into his.but so little added spices go into my powders that I would still add the other things even though there in your store bought powder.

    I just use dried crushed red chilli flakes in my Jeff's Rub. Works just fine seeds and all.
