Hello,

I'm still a noob and I've been looking to buy my first real smoker and hopefully have one by spring. I've been really interested in Masterbuilt Electric Smokers but I'm unsure about model or type to purchase. I know I also plan on buying the optional side-box so I can do longer smokes and also cold smoke. But I really would like some advice in to what would be best for starting out.

My second question is; I live in a appartment complex and I need a good way to keep my smoker safe when I'm using it so it don't grow a pair of legs and also what would be the best way to store it indoors?

If you can afford the 40" I would get that one. The extra space will come in handy. The optional smoker box that goes on the side works well, but most of the MES guys on here use pellet burners from Amazen products. The owner is a member & a real stand up guy.

Here's the link: http://www.amazenproducts.com/

Good luck,

Al

Morning Zoe.....

Masterbuilt 20070910 30-Inch Black Electric Digital Smoker, Top Controller  $177 at Amazon.....

It's probably the original smoker they built.... not too sure...   It seems to have fewer problems than some of the newer models...

If you can find a 40" in a gen 1, that would be good...   I have heard the Gen 2.5 is good also....

You want the exhaust on the top of the smoker body....   Seems exhaust on the side has some draft issues...    BUT, folks have got them to work also with some mods...  I think those are Gen 2....

I have the Gen 1 30" smoker... modified it severely....  I think it works perfectly now... I'm very happy with it except for how much it holds..  The AMNPS is a BIG deal... the mailbox mod is a BIG deal....   I modified the heating element to be controlled with a dimmer switch which is a BIG deal....  If I knew what a PID is and how to use it, and installed it, from what I understand, that is the best route to go ....

That's a great product and would get it for added flavor. :) , I'm also looking into using wood chips for smoking as I live in Western Washington and I'm looking into getting wood from local fruit sources.

Good morning and welcome to the forum, from a cold and windy day here in East Texas, and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Be sure and check with the apartment mgmt. to see what there rules are.
