Redstone SFB Smoker

Discussion in 'Side Fire Box' started by doncarp, Sep 4, 2013.

  1. The initial assembly is complete.  I used red high temp silicone to seal the fire box and the chimney.

I put a felt gasket on the lid.

That caused the hinge to be misaligned, which I expected.  Here was the smoker at this stage of the build.

Then I took it to my local metal fab shop for further modifications.  They are going to remove and re-align the hinges.  Build a water box with 1/4" plate, install supports for tuning plates, make me five tuning plates from 1/2" steel, and build a charcoal box to sit inside the fire box.

1/2" steel is too thick, it will absorb a lot of heat and you will need to use too much fuel to get up to and maintain temps. 1/8" is all you need to redirect the heat.

  3. Thank you for your input. My intent was to create some mass since this is an inexpensive unit with thin steel. After reading your comment I called the shop and told them to make the tuning plates out of 1/4" steel.
