Ready to smoke in the North/East!

Discussion in 'Roll Call' started by redwyvern2, Jul 11, 2013.

  1. Hi everyone, my name is Keith, and I'm a fledgling griller. Right now I'm using 3 grills, 1 propane, and 2 charcoals. Just this past July 4th, I tried smoking on the propane, and 1 of the kettle grills (the ribs wouldn't fit on just 1). I did a pretty decent job with foil wrapped apple wood chips, and small tray of water. I rubbed the ribs KC style, and cooked them for about 5 hours. Well, they ended up being the star of the holiday food!

Now, I want to get me a REAL smoker so I can begin my journey to becoming a pit master! Even though I live in Yonkers, New York, my family roots are in Wilson, North Carolina so I have a taste for chopped bbq, and ALL THINGS smoked!

I'm hoping my research here will lead me down the road to bbq bliss!

    Let the smoking begin!

A Tarheel in Yonkers, sounds like a Mark Twain short story. Glad to meet you Keith, like they said this place is total awesome sauce! The search engine is just bustin apart at the seams with information on everything, the Guru's are around for a reason I thick they have to pass a written oral and practical exam. The people (that's me), are so helpful that you'll wish you wouldn't have spoken up out loud. Just kidding. Everyone here has something to share and something to learn, but the greatest thing is the inspiration. It all drives you to do more and better with some of the oddest smokes you can imagine, smoked deviled eggs?

Everyone shares, everyone cares, and you really have no choice but to ingest some small part of it. You'll hear alot about something called Q-view. Don't worry its just attaching pictures so others can also appreciate what it is that you have achieved, and in most cases decide to try themselves. You know of course a picture is worth a thousand words and some of use old country boys do pictures well, even with out staples in the middle.

just a suggestion, tomorrow at work steal a notebook, journal, binder, flash drive and bring it home. Use it for writing a synopsis of every smoke you do and keep them safe. That way you will remember exactly what you did on your last smoke, what you liked, what you didn't, what to ask the Guru's and what you'd like to attempt to tweak on the next smoke. I look at it this way, what if you did achieve the perfect smoke the very first time and you forgot how you did it?

I always get long winded on introductions. Their will be even more Guru's along to help with your indoctrination, and don't worry it won't hurt much.

Nice meeting you and remember to enjoy the smoke.

BTW if I can help and you don't see me online, drop me a /PM. I may not know the right answer but I know some smart folks who would.

Welcome from Central NY.  Any idea what kind of smoker you're looking for yet?

  6. Hi LanceR,

I'm probably looking to start with the Weber Smokey Mountain. I hear that's a monster of a smoker, and great for starting off.

If you didn't read the Terms of Service notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums. Rule #11......"Off Site Links are not allowed here at SMF" is something new. There are other simple guidelines for all of us to remember as we interact here.

If you need any help roaming around here in SMF....just give me a shout.  Happy to help any time!

Keith, I've never had a WSM but I think I'd have a fight on my hands to get one away from the folks who have them.

    Good luck.
