Hi guys, I've enjoyed looking around the forum and I'm looking forward to learning a lot from all of your experience. I've been grilling for quite a while now, and I've always loved smoked meat, but I've never tried doing it myself. I got some extra money recently and bought a Masterbuilt smoker. Definitely not top of the line, but it looks like it will work for a beginner. My church is going to have a smoked meat contest in June so I have some time to practice, but I was wondering... what is the best meat to smoke? Thanks in advance.

First off, welcome to SMF, Mighty Mouse! Second, be sure to sign up for the free 5-day eCourse-lots of good info to be found there.

As for what to smoke-if you have the time; a pork butt is good, it's also more forgiving when subjected to temp spikes. If you only have a short amount of time; a beer-butt chicken or chicken thighs are good and so is a smoked meat-loaf.

Remember to practice, practice, practice-that's the only way that you'll learn your smoker.

See you in the Forums-

Enjoy!

Welcome to SMF, Mighty Mouse. We are glad to have you here. There is plenty of information to read here, so you are well on your way to become a fine smoker, as you've already made a purchase. I say, "Smoke Everything" but of course that is not real. (Or is it?......hmmmmm) Good luck with the contest. Practice on the weekends & remember, if you fail, eat it & try again. There is no bad smoke just a better smoke next time. Enjoy your stay here & do not hesitate to ask those questions.

Welcome to SMF... the best meat to smoke will be your call... your taste... im sure everyone here will say a different meat... just smoke EVERYTHING LOL... try different woods (and wood combos), different rubs, different mops, different sauces, different meats, veggies, ect... the variations and possibilities really are endless.. Have fun!

Welcome Mighty Mouse my first was home made sausage but that is a whole other story. Then I did a Pork Butt that came out great with the help from these guys. Good Luck..enjoy it here.

Welcome aboard from a former Iowigan! Lots of great stuff from regular people. I am getting ready to try sausage, got some new equipment. i like the ability to make very cheap cuts taste good-like chicken, pork butt and brisket. A butt is hard to ruin, and if you ruin a yard bird well you aren't out much. Generally low and slow goes better with those, but you can do anything-game fish hot dogs. It's all good! Read up on what you want to do here first, helped me a lot doing that.
