Ok now, I have been waiting and waiting for the local dealer to bring in an off set smoker. Not a lot of dealers or I think intrest in these types of smokers in the Pacific Northwest. So, they finally arrived and as I was drooling over the thing (can't even remember the brand now) I was offered a tid bit of meat that had been smoking, yes smoking on a Big Green Egg. Oh my gawd, what a wonderful, moist, smoke flavor.
Help, I am now really, really wanting one of those things. Smokes, grills, bakes, why should I not get one? Price is cheek to cheek with the off set. Any thoughts?

You can smoke with an egg. It seems like a glorified UDS to me, anyhow. The great part of this site is the diversity of what folks use to achieve their great BBQ.

Pull the trigger! Don't forget to post results (with pics) of your decision.

The egg is great. If you want E Z smoking it's prolly the best butt you gotta pay the price of about $900.00 which is a lot for a big hunk of clay. dirt guy has a valid point........UDS! Actually I like BUD, big ugly drum.

eggs are great and easy to use but a nice offset usually has more space........

For $900, I would get a 22" WSM, and 22" Weber Kettle. You can't beat a WSM for all around backyard smoking performance, it is so good it wins BBQ competitions all the time (2009 KCBS Team of the Year used WSMs). Why get a weber Kettle for grilling, since you can grill with the WSM too, but you have to change you the setup a bit. Having both gives you a lot of variety in what you can do, smoke some ribs on the WSM and finish them on the kettle, or have some smoked meats going on the WSM and grilling other stuff. I do that all the time use the smoker for ribs, Kettle grilling a chicken and even use my gas weber for cooking appetizers.

those eggs are nice, and fuel misers for sure, plus you can do pizza, etc. @ high temps.

if you got the coin to drop I say do it.

If the BGE price is an issue, I personally would skip an offset, and get a WSM for smoking for a more economical/better smoker..

I would pull the trigger but just point it away from you. Now I have been smoking for years now and it's the best thing that I have ever done. You will love it and then you can branch off and make some sausage and then bacon and then you will be well on your way the the smoing way of life and let me be the first one to tell you it's a really nice way on life too.

if your in that price range, you need to check out pellet cookers !

i just got one, its basically a auto-feeding wood fired convection oven with thermostat control .
turn the temp down in the 180-250 range and smoke is on
