Ive just bought the Brinkmann Trailmaster Limited edition from our Costco here in Manchester, UK....probably a bit excessive for the 5 days of sunshine each summer...BUT...

I've also bought a big 10 bag pack of bar-be-quick instant light lumpwood charcoal and am now worried that I've gotten the wrong stuff as the instructions mention that I shouldn't use 'treated charcoal'....

Anyone use this stuff...? Is it save with my new smoker?

    Many thanks in advance :)

Yeah, Rob. You are safe or they couldn't seel it to you. However there's that God awful smell and taste you have to contend with,I'd say go find some Hard wood ,start with the Lump and use the wood to cook with , I just don't like the taste of Petrol on my food...

Thanks for the reply oldschool. So I think I'll use it to season the bbq like people here recommend, and then add wood when ready to smoke meat...

Do you ever cook anything in the smoker itself or do you always put the meat over on the main grill area?
  4. Hello from the midlands and welcome.  oldschoolbbq has you sorted.  He knows his stuff.  Being originally from Texas I have some experience also. [IMG]  That insta-light stuff is vile!!  Won't kill ya but may put you off bbq forever.  I wouldn't use it to season my pit.  The seasoning process allows smoke and oils to be absorbed into the pores of the metal.  If you use that stuff you may well be tasting it for a very long time. I don't know how "new" you are to smoking but you don't clean your smoker.  Well, maybe once a year or so and then reseason.  Do clean your racks after every smoke unless you can REALLY burn them off.  B&Q has lumpwood charcoal on offer at the moment.  I would use that and maybe some oak wood chunks to season that pit.  Please don't use U.S.A. costs as a comparison to ours.  We gotta pay more over here, but deals can be found.  I have some sources for different items and happy to share what knowledge I have.  If I can't help maybe know where to steer you for advice.   So if I can help with anything, shoot me a PM and ask or just to tell me you posted a question.  Trying to help get more British folk interested in smoking.  Good Luck.  Keep Smokin!
