Just recently built a smokehouse out of some untreated pine and would like to know what to use to seal and protect the wood? It will be used strictly for cold smoking and hanging hams to cure.

I was looking for somthing to seal the exterior surface of the wood,

I think what your saying will be fine on the inside but wont help much for the exterior

Linseed Oil worked good, and Thompson's makes a whole line of wood sealers, I used a deck sealer on the outside of mine, mostly because they sell it in 1gal cans, and its non-toxic, the outside can be sealed with any wood sealer though. Mostly depends on how you want it to look. There are smokers on here that have used anything from Linseed Oil, to Paint.

Like AK said though, run 2 or 3 smokes with no meat and the inside will have a nice smoke seal to it.

If you use anything flammable to seal it, just make sure you let it dry well and leave the doors open a day or two to make sure the fumes have a chance to escape, even though its on the outside, it will take some air to make it safe to light a fire.
