Just got my MES tonight. Came home from a meeting and there it was...11:00 pm. No smokin tonight. But started to set it up. As some of you know I am trying to eliminate steps so am trying to place on the front porch. HOWEVER, problem. The electric receptacle is about 3 feet beyond the reach of the smoker. So I have to use an extension cord. Can anyone who know electrical stuff, seems to be alot of you, tell me what type to use? I know heavier grade, but is there something I should look for on the label? I can cut it down and make it into a 3 foot extension, but need to know the grade? ??? Thanks for any help

I am not an electrical expert but the research I have done would recommend a 12 gauge.

Hope this helps and good luck with the MES.

Go to Sears or an appliance store and get a HD extension cord for a fridge or the like. They are usually 10-12 gauge wire and only 3-6 feet long, so there's no mess.

I purchased a 10' #12 wire ext cord from Harbor Freight for $9.

I may be a lil late to help the OP,But for future use.
Go to lowes /home depot or any electrical supply .
You can buy what as known as 10 / 3 so cord by the foot.(10 being wire size ,3 being number of 10 guage wires, Hot -neutral -ground)
Buy a male and female heavy duty cord end(plugs).
Make your own heavy duty cord at the length you need .
Black wire goes on gold screw white wire goes on silver screw and green wire goes on green screw.
Make it only as long as you need plus maybe 5 - 10 xtra feet so that you can move the smoker around if need be.

You are going to love that MES never thought I would go electric but the last month has me wondering if I will ever use my stick burner again.

Thanks ETCO1~ I HAVE TO SAY i AM REALLY EXCITED. I am so dense it never occurred to me to go electric to fix my problem with bad knees and stairs and the constant running to 'tend the fire'. Finally ordered one after visiting here and it arrived late last nite, so no smoking this week end, but next week end, watch out!!! LOL

Thanks for everyone's wonderful support

That is quite a statement!

I know for just ease of operation and use the MES is easier, but how about other things...

- Smoke flavor, how do you rate the two, or is there enough of a noticeable difference to really say one is better than the other?

- Bark, especially on pulled pork and brisket. Do you think the bark is better on the stick burner or can you achieve a similar bark with the MES? How about ribs, compare?

Any other obvious difference that you could share that make you give the MES such a strong thumbs up?

OK when comparing the two first I must tell you with my other smokers don't have fireboxes they were built in South Texas where the majority of the cooking is done with hot mesquite coals and chunks for smoking. It takes a lot of care and work to get really good smoked meat. It is not hard just takes a lot of TLC. The smoke flavor I have gotten from my MES has been very comparable I am getting TBS using about 4 cups of chips over a 12 hour smoke and the flavor is there. Now bark is missing on the brisket but I have a plan to sear the next one one before I place it in the MES. But that being said the smoke flavor on the brisket was outstanding and the juice was flowing out. My mother in law who has very little poitive to say about anything in life even commented on how good that brisket turned out. And there was some bark on the brisket just not as much as the family is use to. With 3 kids that range from 3 to 9 in age it is a better option for me to spend the day outside with them while I cook and not worry about a fire that they can get burned on so I have fuel for my meat. All I can say is I was a little hesitant about an electric smoker because I felt it would not taste like the BBQ I grew up with and I was wrong in that department it does have that BBQ taste my family enjoys.
