I have obtained two drums so far, one is a food grade drum open top with the red liner that I am not wanting to remove one bit. I just got another reconditioned drum from an oil distributor that is closed top.

My question is, can the lid from the open top drum be used on the closed top drum after torching out the top and leaving the lip?

I know i can get a Weber kettle top and made this work but for the time being is this a practical solution?

Take the lid from the removable one, and see if it fits over the rim of the sealed one. You may need to use a pair of vice grips and open the channel on the removable lid some, but if the OD is the same, you should be able to make it work. I relieved my lid a little after putting in the high temp flat gasket.
