Question about gasket

I am looking for some input on sealing the firebox door and cooking
chamber door.
I am using the nomex lavalock gasket.
I have read some people recommend putting it on the door
and not the mating surface.
I am in the process of modding another OK Joes
on the first one I put the gasket on the mating surface because the
doors are not mounted 100% sqare and cannot be adjusted.

I am still very new to smoking and any input is greatly appreciated.

I can't help you on gasket installation, but if you will go up top and hit the search bar, you should find lots of information.

Use high temp silicone- the one rated for 1000°F- about $17-18 a tube at Aubuchon's.

You should mount on the door, it will be less likely to get damaged when adding coals to the fire.
