I am wondering where the best placement for the fan inlets into the firebox are in relation to the charcoal basket. I was going to build a basket where all sides where expanded metal and have the air blowing directly into the side. I looked at a a lot of images on google search and noticed that a lot of charcoal boxes in vertical insulated cookers have solid sides and expanded metal on bottoms. Where would the guru fans go with this setup and is this better than all expanded metal?

IMHO you are always better of feeding air to the bottom/underneath side of your fire, as long as ash build up does not interfere with air flow. I think I saw where a guy with a UDS and a Guru just extended his air inlet under the edge of his basket.
I really don't know about your question on the charcoal basket construction, but I am sure that someone with experience will chime in here.
