This is my idea of converting a 500 gallon propane tank.
I would cut both ends of the tank off. Then cut off a 2 foot section of the main body for use as the fire box. Main question is about square versus round fire box? Any advantage disadvantage either way?

Hello and welcome jrbuilder,

Either will work just fine. The only difference is that a square firebox is a bit more straightforward to build doors, air inlets, and grates.

If you are comfortable working within the constraints of a round firebox, it will get the job done.

Just curious what is the protocol to safely drill into a former gas tank? Seems like that could be real dangerous.

I have not done it myself but I think some people fill them with soap and water and let them sit for a while..hopefully someone who has experience or more knowledge than I do will chime in :)

The protocol for cutting one that I have found is you vent the tank then fill it with water. You then cut the tank with water in it. Have been considering cutting the section that would be the fire box in half. Making a fire box that is a half moon on top and square on the bottom. That way the warmer would only have a little direct contact with the fire box. Thanks for the input
