I have several propane and diesel tanks that I no longer use. I have the welder and skill to make BBQ rigs of them. I don't need that many so my question is, what prices are and would it be worth it to make them to sell. We're talking 250's, 500's, and 750's as well as some smaller stuff.

Ideas?

Since I can get at least scrap prices and most likely tank prices w/o making BBQ rigs of them, I won't be spending much time on them. Hopefully someone will have some more encouraging info.

Speaking from experience: Smokers like you are talking require ALOT more than just welding. That's what holds 'em together, yes, but grate fab, hinging, firebox construction, etc... it's ALOT of labor and ALOT more metal than just the tank. I doubt you'd find much profitability unless you can get all this done cheaply, in an almost "mass production" type arrangement. Now,if you mean dividends in personal satisfaction, get rolling!

Ah-ha, another wonderful dream down the tubes.

Thanks, guys.

Instead of saying down the tubes, why not make one and put it up for sale and see what comes of it. If it is something you have an interest in, then don't throw in the towel until you give it a whirl.

Might give a new meaning to "I have a Greazy Smoker" LOL

Din't mean to discourage ya, just educate. It's a big job. But, if ya do one, the renting idea is cool, or donate time to the churches, etc, and get a tax writoff... could pay for itself in a little while.

Or go hog wild, set up jigs for common parts, get your scrap together, purchase what ya must. But yer not gonna get rich on 5-6 smokers.

Like Fatback Joe said - try one - it may stir your creative juices and no telling what kind of cool Q-rigs you may come up with...

Show us pics when you get the first made... it may end up encouraging us in the end!
