Huge mistake......I mentioned to my wife I was looking to try a butt or shoulder for the superbowl, She bought a pork roast..... Any one try smoking a pork roast instead of a butt for sandwiches?

i have smoked em..........is it a rolled roast......with netting?
the one i smoked, i just sliced for a meal, not sandwiches...........its still not too late to get a boston butt...........use this roast as a trail run........but i feel, if its a roast with netting, it may not pull......not sure on that one..........

A roast is going to be a lot leaner and in my mind is more suitable for slicing.

If you are looking for a cut for pulled pork go with a boston butt, a picnic or a whole shoulder.

Roast's usually don't have enough fat content to be able to pull, but iv'e also seen butt's labeled as roast's........is it fatty or lean?
otherwise go get a butt or a shoulder.

First mistake is letting the wife do the meat shopping.

I buy all my smoking meat myself. Even when buying butts I feel around them and feel the bone size to select the best one. maybe a little of a perfectionist.

My wifes starting to figure out what to look for when selectig certain meats.

Amen to that!! Last time I asked wife to get some "good" steaks she came back with round steak.
Now I get all the meat.

might want to inject that dawg before ya try and smoke it!

I ran into the same situation as Majorlee69. My wife bought the hunk of meat it says on the package "All natural Pork roast" but on the lable from the store with the price per lb. etc. it says "Fresh Pork Shoulder Butt RST BNLS" there is no netting on it. So what do I have? I just took it out of the fridg to thaw for a smoke on Sunday and saw this thread.
Thanks

I'm with glued2it on meat shopping, now it has gone to where I have my very own fridge to keep my meats and stuff (frozen chile, brews). I got lucky as the previous owner left a good working fridge, but the wife didn't want to use it. My Good.
