Just picked up a pork butt from Kroger yesterday. Had it in fridge still in the packaging. Says sell by 8.25. Today is the 23 so my question is how does a pork butt smell straight out of the packaging. It has a slight sulfury odor. Kind of like an old egg

It'll be fine. The sulfur odor should dissipate after a wash and a few minutes. If it still stinks a half hour or so after a wash, then I'd take it back. I mean really stinks, a faint odor remaining is ok.

Thanks for the info. I'm testing the temp of my back fridge. It might have been holding since yesterday a little over 40 degrees :(

If it's been at over 41 for an undetermined length of time then I'd be taking it back to the store. Who's to say if that sulfur smell is safe or not? I'd just mention that it had been in the refrigerator since you bought it. Wink wink.

I would but I seasoned it up and all that. Oh well. I discarded it. What a waste. But it was cheap anyway. My half of a brisket was just fine though. No smell etc. same place the pork was stored

More important than one piece of meat?

If your fridge is running over 40 at the back?

I would be getting after that fridge!

Good luck and good smoking.
